Residential Universal Design Building Code

Standards for universally accessible housing.

UD Building Code Chapters:

This code has been validated by research, and each of the 150+ design elements explains why it is important.

What

The Residential Universal Design Building Code is a compilation of design elements that we believe are necessary to make a home universally accessible.

To validate our assertions and to minimize biases, we solicited feedback from nearly 200 individuals with either personal or professional experience with a wide range of disabilities. No design elements are specific to one demographic or user.

Why

Most housing is unregulated by accessibility policy. Many accessibility details in home design are often overlooked. The Residential Universal Design Building Code fills in those gaps.

Each design element is important and needs to be included for a home to be considered universally accessible. This is intended to supplement existing residential building codes.
